Angela is an enthusiast of the theatre, proud mother of a stuntman/Ninja Warrior contestant and a daughter currently completing a PhD, and also a quadruple amputee due to blood poisoning in 1995. She has two prosthetic feet with fused ankles, a prosthetic arm on the left, and several fingers on her right and have been fused, leaving her with only a small capacity for grasping and manipulating objects. Angela can walk short distances, but uses a crutch for balance and confidence. She uses her electric scooter for longer activities and has a car with modifications that facilitate her driving independently. The crutch Angela uses at present was constructed by her occupational therapist at Solve; it has a ‘croc’ shoe attached to the hand grip and she uses the croc as a hand casing, as she is not able to grasp onto the hand grip. Angela attested to the functional capabilities of this modified crutch, but was less enthusiastic
about its appearance. Our task was to make her an updated mobility aid that she would be proud to use!
The device is a modified walking aid with a hand casing for Angela who is unable to grip a normal walking aid handle. Angela would use this walking aid for shorter distances
like cafe’s, theatre, during her volunteer role and when walking to and from her car. For longer distances, she uses her power wheelchair.
