Metro Makeathon

2017

THE CHALLENGE

Brent lives in an independent assisted living community. Brent is schedule-oriented, and keeps his day busy with his work as a chef and his hobbies such as fishing. Brent, his mother Kate, and his support workers would like a way to make Brent's exercise more engaging and entertaining, with incentives and challenges that he can incorporate into his daily routine.

THE SOLUTION

The team developed a prototype application called 'Step it Up'. The app interacts with a Fitbit to measure the number of steps Brent takes daily and his exercise trends. Brent's support workers can set him daily and weekly goals, and upon completion this will reward Brent with a virtual trophy. To increase the incentive, the app includes an Augmented Reality (AR) fish tank, in which Brent can redeem his trophies for virtual tropical fish. The virtual fish tank can be viewed in the app and also through Brent's camera.
